When a non-lawyer friend called to congratulate me on winning this year’s The Best Lawyers in Australia’s Adelaide Lawyer of the Year award in the Mergers and Acquisitions category, he jokingly suggested no-one else had bothered to nominate. It was a friendly dig at the fact that I’ve won the award twice in the last three years.
Then, on a more serious note, he asked” So tell me, Gerry, what makes a great lawyer?”.
After some thought, I decided I’d share my thoughts in this blog and hopefully assist anyone hiring a lawyer to ask the right questions and get the best outcomes.
In a nutshell, good lawyers get the picture, great lawyers help their clients paint the picture.
They deliver more than just legal advice but strategic advice from a legal perspective, tailored to each unique set of circumstances and objectives. They should be helping their clients to meet their business objectives, all the while giving them certainty of outcome, particularly with on-time and on-budget delivery.
There’s no off-the-shelf one-size-fits-all creed with great lawyers but all of them ‘give before they get’ and take the time to really understand their clients and the objectives they’re aiming to achieve.
I’d like to think that’s what the team at Kain’s does and it accounts for much of the recognition that has come our way in recent months.
Beyond the Best Lawyers accolades, we were also the only Adelaide-based law firm without offices interstate to be ranked in Thomson Reuters’ Top 20 Australian legal practices for advisory deals in 2015 year and, more recently, achieved ‘top-tier’ status in the 2016 Doyle’s Guide to ‘Leading Corporate and Commercial Law Firms – Adelaide’.
But perhaps most humbling of all is to learn that so many of our peers and valued clients also seem to think we do a pretty good job.
